The schools that were involved were Wainuioru, Gladstone, Whareama, St Matt's and St Pat's and they each had a country that they were representing. Wainuioru was representing Tonga. Some of the other countries were England, Samoa, Japan, Australia and some others who we didn't face.
Our team consisted of Vania, Nate, Lachie, Pip, Olivia, Josh, Joe, Thomas, William and Flynn.
We played 4 games lost 3 of them and won 1.
Apparently they had a good day and Vania won a rugby ball for being the best player in the team and the team won a trophy.
Each race went up in our years, so the year ones went first, year eights went last, the amount of laps and lengths each group did was the number year you were so year six's did six of each everyone tried really hard but everyone kept stopping because it was so hot, it would feel so good once your dived into the pool. After we were allowed to have two pieces of fruit, for something to munch on.
Because it is so dry here in the Wairarapa, our school cannot use the incinerator to get rid of our rubbish.and it has been building up.
Our class decided to try to solve this problem.
As a school, we now have to take all of our lunchbox rubbish home and we are even trying to reduce the amount of rubbish that we bring in the first place.
Other rubbish gets taken to the recycling station by the teachers and we are now collecting our paper rubbish in each class and that will be taken to be recycled too.
Food rubbish gets composted and we will use the compost in our vegetable garden. The only food rubbish comes from the staffroom! The children take theirs all home.Wainuioru Schoolhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13480969259875760087noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3678338805357509665.post-18998196002724799892013-03-07T15:36:00.001-08:002013-03-07T15:40:33.936-08:00Gardening March 2013We have two existing vegetable gardens and Guy Williams has just built two more with the help of four children in Ngaumu. Our vegetable gardens have not been well looked after in the past but we plan to grow a selection of vegetables to use for our sausage sizzle on Fridays and maybe sell some if we get too many.
We have also been given four new fruit trees to add to our orchard. The trees are a plum tree, a nashi pear tree, a pear tree and an apple tree. We have set an area aside for a pumpkin patch and we plan to use the pumpkins for soup in the winter. The tyres will be used to grow potatoes. It is too dry to do any planting just now but we are preparing the gardens.
On Wednesday 27 February 2013 Wainuioru, Tinui, Whareama and Mauriceville had swimming sports. There Were 71 events and the first one was the 100m freestyle open.
After the swimming the 4 schools went over to the park for a picnic. We played four games. One of them was where you had to throw 4 objects as far as you can and the fielders weren't allowed to move until you threw all of the objects. Then you had to run around a cone and a hoop as many times as you can while the fielders had to put the objects back in the hoop. We all did very well with 11 people from our school going to the inter-schools.
First we were broken up into our teams then went over to our first activity. The games were Chinese Walls, Rob the Nest and Non Stop Cricket. Each team got to play 3 games. It was so much fun because we nearly won all of our games and it was quite competitive. When all groups had finished, we went over for the races.

The races were sack race, egg and spoon and 3 legged race. I participated in all three races and my favourite one was the potato and spoon because I won that one. Some kids cheated by poking their spoons into their potatoes!

Finally we got to go for a swim in the Greytown Pool. The pool was really cool because it was so deep. The life guard let us do bombs and it was a really hot day so it was nice to cool off. We swam for a couple of hours and Nate and Lachie were one of the last to leave.

I love the school picnic and I can't wait for next year.
We were put into three groups and one group at a time were taken to the back of the stadium to see some wool pressing.
In the stadium, the shearers had to shear 5 sheep as fast as they could. Whoever had the lowest score was the winner. Next there were races for people doing hand wool pressing. They had to fill one wooden box and one steel box up with wool and press the wool down as hard as they possibly could. Then they put one box on top of the other and pulled a handle to squash the wool even further. Then they closed up the fadge, weighed it and the fadge closest to the weight was the winner. They also had to do it as fast as possible.
It was our first time at the golden shears and we really enjoyed it. We would like to go again next year. Hopefully the people organising it will invite us again.
Sam Curtis, Daniel and Darren have been coming out on Thursdays to teach the rest of the school cricket and it is the year 6's job to teach the 5 year olds.
There are 6 year 6 students so we have 3 Ngahape students each. Last week we taught them catching and throwing skills and this week we taught them how to bowl and how to hold the bat. We also played a small game of non-stop cricket.
We are enjoying our role as mentors and we enjoy watching the Ngahape students learning new skills and having fun,

We hope to continue teaching them for the next couple of weeks.
We have a great class this year with 21 students from year 6 to year 8. We have already had a number of exciting things happen in our school. We had our school picnic in Greytown in week one. It was a beautiful day and everyone had fun playing games, having a picnic lunch and a great swim at the Greytown pool.
We have tennis coaching once a week, cricket coaching, soccer skills and chess coaching. We are looking forward to swimming sports and our school duathlon later on in the term.
Keep looking on our page at our new posts.Wainuioru Schoolhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13480969259875760087noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3678338805357509665.post-81089035434109516452012-09-20T19:13:00.005-07:002012-09-20T19:14:24.029-07:00PhotographyAt the start of term 2 the whole of Wainuioru School started practising taking photos for the Wairarapa Schools photo competition. We had all taken alot of photos but we could only chose one to go in the Wainuioru competition. The staff chose the best 5 photos out of each year group and the photos that won get to go in the real Wairarapa school competition. we stopped taking photos week 9 of term 3. There were 2 categories - living and non-living. We have not yet found out who has won but we are hoping it is someone from our school.Wainuioru Schoolhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13480969259875760087noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3678338805357509665.post-76145081020957477602012-09-20T19:09:00.008-07:002012-09-20T19:09:32.189-07:00GARDENING 2 weeks ago, Ngaumu and Ngahape started to replant our vegetable gardens. First we weeded the weeds because the weeds were taking over. Then we planted onions and lettuce. We are trying to get a big garden so we can use the vegetables at school. We are also going to plant a variety of vegetables and fruits. We are going to use the onions for our sausages each Friday , the lettuce and onions for our burgers that we make at school. I sort of enjoy gardening although i do get annoyed when the mud dries on your hands.Wainuioru Schoolhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13480969259875760087noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3678338805357509665.post-7333447186573169622012-09-20T19:08:00.011-07:002012-09-20T23:49:18.112-07:00School DiscoOn Friday the 28th of September Ngaumu is holding a disco at the Wainuioru School hall from 6pm till 8pm for Ngaumu Poroporo, Fernyhurst & Ngahape to enjoy. The parents and teachers have agreed to run the electives and have offered a variety of choices and activities.
The electives we could choose this year are Crafts, kayaking, technology challenge, card making, swimming, drama, cycle skills, cooking and baking, fun with science, triplet lamb transfer, camping skills, music, Japanese, arts and crafts, print making and computer animation.
In technology challenge we have made a flagpole out of straws, a catapult and a tower made out of dried spagetti. we also had to design a structure made from straws that would hold a nut and we had to make a bird feeder house out of news paper.
In baking, we have made cupcakes, pizza, pikelets, smoothies, sherbet and learnt how to make icing.
In card making we have made a selection of different cards with different designs on them using special card making equipment.
In drama we are doing a play called Penny and the Wolf and in fun with science we explored oobleck, made fizzy lemonade and lava lamps. It has already been a lot of fun and we are all looking forward to another 3 weeks of electives.
Our electives only happens at our school every two years.Wainuioru Schoolhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13480969259875760087noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3678338805357509665.post-83001636353790990352012-05-10T17:43:00.000-07:002012-05-10T17:43:19.481-07:00On Tuesday 8th and Wednesday 9th Molly M, Callum, Henry, Xanthe, Fin, Cameron and Holly went to a Be Inspired Conference at the Solway Copthorne.
There was about 100 and something kids from different schools that were there. Everyone got given a lanyard which had the 4 workshops that we were doing over the 2 days.

I (Holly) was doing the High & Low rope course which was a 10 - 15 minute drive from the Copthorne.
When my group arrived we met the 2 instructors Nico and Kara.
We walked 5 minutes to the High and Low rope course. When we finally arrived we put on our harness and cow tails which are ropes that clip you on to the wire. After everyone had their gear on we got clipped on to a blue rope to help the front person climb up the ladder. When you reach the top platform you had to pick which way to go, The long course or the Short course, everyone went the long way.
At the end of the short and long course was a flying fox, which was so much fun. When we had all finished on the high rope course we went to play on the low rope course which was just swings and low wires to balance on. After having fun we walked back to the bus and drove back to the Copthorne to have lunch.

Callum did theatre sports which was in the games room. In theatre sports they did lots of acting games, and learnt to not be scared in front of an audience. One of the games Callum played was Yes Let's . Its a game when the leader says something for the others to do and they have to say yes lets. They played other acting games as well.

Cameron did Construction to Function. Their teachers were from architech and designing universitity. They had to achive a system that would stop a egg smashing at a drop of 2 metres. They were only allowed to use 4 rubber gloves, 20 straws and some cellotape. They blew up a glove to make a soft wall.
They thought it wouldnt be enough so they made a pyramid out of straws to brace it when he dropped it. The egg bounced but the egg didn't smash.

Xanthe did create a masterpiece where they had to draw a sea creature. Then outline it with ink and paint it if they wanted to but Xanthe wanted here's black and white so she didn't paint her's.

Fin did painting with light with Mr Kennard. They learn't to use a digital camera and how to use the macro unction fand taking pictures at different angles. Then they went on comic life and did a collage of the pictures they took.

Henry did the programmable Robots with Mrs Gordon. They first got taught how to programe the robot by punching in numbers to make it go forward, backwards and turn around. They also played lots of games. Henry's favourite game was the apricot picking game, where we have to make the robot drive up next to an apricot tree and pick an apricot. The person with the most apricot's win.

Finally, just before we finished on the last day a surprise visitor came to talk to us and his name was Johnson from What Now. Johnson came to talk to us about being shy, confidence and his life when he was younger and all the oppurtunities that everyone has. Johnson asked a few people what they wanted to be when they grew up and some people said All Black, Silver Fern or a nurse. He inspired alot of people and made us more confident to do stuff. When Johnson had finished talking to us we went out side and everyone got his autograph.

The be inspired conference was so much fun and everyone really enjoyed the workshops and meeting Johnson.
